This original engraving was made in London in 1845 by Thomas Allom (1804-1872), was a renowned 19th-century British landscape painter and architect. His travels in Asia starting from the 1820s inspired a series of popular landscape paintings depicting Asian scenes. Among these, the China series is widely regarded as the best engravings of 19th-century China. He was also one of the founders of the “Royal Institute of British Architects,” with architectural designs including the famous St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament in London.
